Hotel Balkan

May 22, 2014

I want to share another exhibit from my most favoritest gallery of all, Duplex 100m2. Igor Bosnjak is exhibiting a video work about a real life, cold war era bunker in a town called Konjic (screenshots below). The bunker means a lot to me, as I was there filming for a youth TV program, and later I worked as an assistant for a contemporary art festival that was held in the bunker. Igor’s video involved lots of close-ups, shifts in focus and an eery soundtrack– it reminds us that although the bunker now looks like a kitschy 70s museum, it was intended as an elite atomic shelter for a post -world where only the top Yugoslav leaders would have been safe, locked away in a hermetically sealed bunker…

Wow, that is both fascinating and scary… to think that this innocent looking building was a bunker during the cold war era. Such interesting history, and so cool that you got to do the film and help with the art festival there!
