Finally we reached North Mitrovica, which reminds me so much of west Belfast. Or maybe it’s the murals. We were here the day before the elections. The boycott campaign (topic of all the posters below) failed; in retaliation hooligans broke up some of the polling stations. On November 17th, the elections in those three polling stations in north Mitrovica were successfully repeated.

What is that mural with the eagles all about?
“from here there’s no going back”– the Serb minority in northern Kosovo wants to stay as a part of Serbia, but the Albanian majority in Kosovo is supporting Kosovo as an independent state… the doubleheaded eagle is a Serb symbol, it’s their intention to keep fighting to remain part of Serbia…

in the church! (photo of the church above the candles). actually it’s kinda interesting because they also leave cigarettes burning in the church, like to offer cigarettes to dead loved ones and give them a chance to smoke in the afterlife 🙂
How interesting that you were able to be there during the elections! I’ve always found different types of governments and the way things are handled to be fascinating!
yeah it was a fascinating time to visit… gave me a different perspective on life in Kosovo…
