Amusing oneself abroad
My first time abroad was dominated by my attempts to teach my little brother to walk and trying to watch as much TV in English as possible. We lived in a hotel for a few months until our parents found a house and bought furniture.
This was Taiwan in 1994 and there was no cable in the hotel. There was a black and white “Casper” cartoon at noon that was in English (feverishly watching, it seemed to me it was over in 2 minutes…) and a wildly-inappropriate-for-little-kids soap opera called “Strong Medicine” that came on after my bedtime, which I sometimes succeeded in wheedling my parents into letting me watch.
My main conversational strong suit in those days was to answer the question, asked in Chinese- “Do you speak Chinese?”, with the Chinese phrase for “A little bit”. And that was all I knew how to say.
This is so great! I grew up in Taiwan so I know exactly what you mean about knowing how to say “A little bit.” That wasn’t all I was able to say, but it’s what I was best at. 🙂
eee cool! where did you grow up? this photo is from Kaoshiung…
This is more than a little bit adorable! Love.

LOOK AT THAT SMILE! the smile of a star.

Actually this was your second or third time that you were overseas…I have a photo of you wearing your sari in Oman and riding a tuk-tuk in Thailand when you were 2-3 years old.
